If you’re thinking about moving to Canada, you might wonder whether you can move there without first having to go through the full process of applying for a visa. The good news is that this is possible; while it isn’t technically part of the application process, you can fill out the online Canada Visa Application form and submit it before having to go in person to your local Canadian embassy or consulate. Here’s what you need to know about applying for your Canada Visa Online and how easy it really is.

What is an eTA?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an electronically verified authorization that allows citizens of certain countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and most European nations, to travel visa-free to Canada. Since 2015, citizens of these select countries have been able to visit Canada without first obtaining a Temporary Resident Visa or work permit. The eTA is valid for five years and can be applied online through Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s official website. If you’ve never visited Canada before, it’s highly recommended that you apply online as soon as possible. All you need is your passport number and credit card information—and it’s free!

How do I apply?

To apply for a Canada Visa Online Application, you need to be able to complete an electronic visa application form. If you’re not sure whether or not your country offers electronic visas, simply check with your local Canadian consulate. Generally speaking, though, only citizens of select countries will be eligible for electronic Canada visas. Here’s where it gets confusing: Some countries list requirements that say you can apply electronically only if your passport has been issued within five years of the date of application. But don’t let that deter you—if you are eligible and have had an e-passport issued in time, by all means, complete an online Canada visa application as soon as possible.

Do I need a passport?

If you’re planning on traveling to Canada as a tourist, then no, you don’t need one. If you’re traveling there as a student or worker though, it is highly recommended that you apply and receive your passport. It can take some time so it’s better if you start early. Once approved, your passport will be sent back via courier delivery. You will have about three months to get it before travel time which should be more than enough time. As long as your passport isn’t expired beyond six months and contains at least two blank pages, then everything should go smoothly.

How long does it take?

In most cases, it takes less than three weeks from start to finish. It’s really important that you apply in plenty of time before your trip so you can get your visa as quickly as possible. The fastest way to get a visa is online; if you use paper forms, it can take up to four months. If you are traveling in two weeks, apply online right away.

What if my application isn’t approved?

We may refuse your application if we decide that, when you arrive in Canada, you are unlikely to support yourself or be otherwise unable to remain in Canada. This could happen if you don’t have enough money and/or you have no family or other ties in Canada. It could also happen if you have been refused entry into Canada in the past. Your application will be refused (and your fees refunded) if your previous visitor visa expired more than five years ago and: (1) more than five years have passed since we last saw each other; (2) our last meeting was less than two years ago; or (3) either of us has since died.

Can I apply in advance of travel?

In order to apply for a Canada visa online, you must be at least 18 years old. If you are between 14 and 17 years old, you must have your parents’ permission in order to get a Canada visa online. Before making an application on your own, ask your parents if they would prefer to fill out your application instead. They will need to answer questions on behalf of their children in addition to completing their own Canada visa applications.

Is there an age requirement?

No, you do not have to be 18 years old. Anyone can apply. The only exception is if you are 15-17 years old and planning on studying English in Canada. In that case, you need parental permission and proof of acceptance into an accredited language school before applying.
