Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or ESTA

France, Germany and the United States share many common visa requirements. All three countries require a valid passport to travel.

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization ( ESTA ) is the U.S. government’s online system that allows travelers from certain countries to apply for a visa without having to visit a U.S. embassy or consulate. The ESTA application can be completed online and requires no additional documentation other than a valid passport.

Below are the basic requirements for travel to the United States via ESTA:

-Valid passport with at least six months remaining validity

-Completed ESTA application form

-Photo identification, such as a driver’s license or passport photo

-Payment of the $14 fee (if applicable)

-Proof of onward travel, such as an airline ticket or hotel reservation confirmation

If you are traveling to the United States on official business, you may be required to obtain a visa in addition to completing an ESTA application. For more information on U.S. visa requirements, please see our articles on visas for French citizens and Germans living in the United States.

Optional Medical Exams for Canadian Citizens

Canadian citizens travelling to the US must have a valid passport, visa, and I-94W form. If you are travelling as a family member of a Canadian citizen, only one of you needs a visa. The others will need a valid passport with at least six months validity after your trip.

The medical exams are required for all Canadian citizens travelling to the US for more than 90 days, even if you have a valid visa. This is because the US has a bilateral agreement with Canada that allows Canadians to stay in the country for up to six months without having to obtain a visa. However, if you are entering the US on a temporary visit (as opposed to an immigrant or tourist visa), you will need to have your medical exam and fill out an DS-160 form.

For those who are not citizens of either the US or Canada but are travelling to the US on an ID card from one of these countries, they do not need any of these exams. Instead, they will need only show their ID card and proof of travel (such as an airline ticket).
